Challenge your Mandarin pronunciation with 15 classic Chinese tongue twisters. Complete with pinyin, audio, and difficulty ratings. From beginner to expert.
1. 四是四,十是十 (sì shì sì, shí shì shí) — Four is four, ten is ten. This is THE classic Chinese twister. It tests the difference between s/sh and flat/retroflex sounds. If you can say this fast 5 times without mixing up 四 and 十, your pronunciation is solid. 2. 妈妈骑马,马慢妈妈骂马 (mā ma qí mǎ, mǎ màn mā ma mà mǎ) — Mom rides a horse, the horse is slow, mom scolds the horse. Tests m- initial and tone changes.
3. 黑化肥发灰,灰化肥发黑 (hēi huà féi fā huī, huī huà féi fā hēi) — Black fertilizer turns grey, grey fertilizer turns black. The ultimate h/f test. Chinese speakers themselves stumble on this. If you nail it at a party, you'll get applause. 4. 吃葡萄不吐葡萄皮 (chī pú tao bù tǔ pú tao pí) — Eat grapes don't spit grape skins. Tests p/b and tone consistency over a repeating syllable pattern.
5. 红凤凰粉凤凰,粉红凤凰花凤凰 (hóng fèng huáng fěn fèng huáng, fěn hóng fèng huáng huā fèng huáng) — Red phoenix pink phoenix, pink red phoenix flower phoenix. The infamous f/h challenge. Even professional broadcasters practice this one. 6. The Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den (施氏食狮史) — A 92-character poem where every syllable is 'shi' with different tones. Written to demonstrate why romanizing Chinese is hard. Listening to this being recited is a religious experience.
